May 24, 2012 (Houston, Texas) John Montgomery, founder of Bridgeway Capital Management and the Bridgeway family of domestic equity mutual funds, was honored by leadership of the Fifth Ward Enrichment Program Inc. (FWEP) as the recipient of their 14th annual Heart of Houston Award. The Heart of Houston award annually recognizes individuals for their tremendous commitment to Houston and its citizens. Montgomery has been deeply involved with the Fifth Ward Enrichment Program, Inc. and its programs for young men since 2002. The Fifth Ward Enrichment Program, Inc. is a youth leadership and development program for at-risk males, ages 12 to 19 years old, located in one of Houston’s most economically depressed neighborhoods.

The Board of Directors, Executive Director Charles Savage and more than 150 other attendees including Montgomery’s mother Leonora Montgomery, Joanie Haley, Juanita Elizondo, Michele Sabino, Stephen Harris, Onedia Gage, and Pamela Thorne enjoyed a convivial luncheon at The Junior League of Houston. Highlights of the luncheon included Montgomery’s moving speech about the importance of his own father in his development as a successful man. He related his experience of having someone who was always there to support him to the work the dedicated and involved mentors of the Fifth Ward Enrichment Program do on a daily basis with the program participants. All audience members were moved by a video message about the mentoring program from current students Samuel and Gary. The video illustrated the impact the program has on young men and closed with a heartfelt message from Quincy Berry, a successful graduate of the program.

Previous Heart of Houston recipients include former Houston Mayor Lee P. Brown, Houston Texans owner-president, Bob McNair, State Representative Sylvester Turner, Pastor Kirbyjon Caldwell and City Attorney Anthony Hall. Jerome Gray, last year’s honoree, served as the Master of Ceremonies.
