Free Grant Seeking Workshop at the Houston Public Library

The Houston Public Library (HPL) will host a free workshop on grant seeking for nonprofit organizations. The Grant Seeking Basics with Foundation Directory Online Workshop will provide participants with an introduction to the world of foundation fundraising and more. The session will be led by Kief Schladweiler, Coordinator of the Cooperating Collections with the Foundation Center. Schladweiler will highlight the electronic and print resources available at the Houston Public Library, a Cooperating Collection of the Foundation Center. The workshop will be held at the Central Library, 500 McKinney, 77002 in the Concourse Computer Training Lab on Monday, March 19, 2012 from 10AM until 12 Noon. The training will cover the following areas:

Grant Seeking Basics

Participants will receive an introduction to the world of foundation fundraising for representatives of a nonprofit organization that may be new to fundraising. They will learn how the funding research process works and what tools and resources are available to become a better grant seeker. The workshop will cover what participants need to have in place before seeking a grant, the world of grant makers, the grant seeking process, and available tools and resources.

Introduction to Finding Funders

Participants will learn about the Foundation Center’s comprehensive online database, Foundation Directory Online Professional, and how to create customized searches to develop targeted lists of foundations that will match the organization’s funding needs. They will spend time exploring Power Search, which will allow them to search across nine

Foundation Center databases which include: grant makers, grants, companies, 990s, news, jobs, RFPs, nonprofit literature, and PubHub reports.

Guide to Online Grant Seeker Resources

The workshop will introduce participants to the resources available on the Foundation Center’s newest website for grant seekers, GrantSpace.org. GrantSpace is a service of the Foundation Center which offers information and resources that are specifically designed to meet the needs of any grant seeker.

About Kief Schladweiler

Kief Schladweiler has been the Foundation Center’s Coordinator of Cooperating Collections since 2005. Prior to that he served as the Center’s online librarian for several years. He joined the Foundation Center in 1999 after working as a reference librarian for The New York Public Library. He received his M.A. in Library and Information Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
