State Representative Scott Hochberg Named Legislator of the Year By the Capital Area Asian American Democrats

State Representative Scott Hochberg, who represents the Sharpstown area, has been named Legislator of the Year by the Capital Area Asian American Democrats (CAAAD). CAAAD works to ensure Asian Americans are represented in government, as citizens and as public servants. According to the organization, "Representative Hochberg exemplifies the diverse range of accomplishments of the Asian American community and its allies."

In making its award, CAAAD noted that "Representative Scott Hochberg spent the 82nd legislative session taking action to protect our schools and citizens during the difficult budgeting process. As a member of the House Appropriations committee and as Vice-Chair of the Public Education committee, he worked to ensure proper funding of the education needs of Texas and to create innovative solutions to improve how we educate our youth. In addition to his work on education, Representative Hochberg served on the Select Committee on Voter Identification & Voter Fraud where he strived to protect each and every vote."

The 2010 census showed that the population of Asian Americans in Texas grew at the fastest rate among racial groups. CAAAD Officer-At-Large Kathleen Santos stated, "While greater numbers can translate into greater influence, growth also requires greater responsibility and greater need for leadership. CAAAD will continue to work to ensure that Asian Americans have a seat at the table, as citizens and as public servants."

The Legislator of the Year award was presented at the Fourth Annual CAAAD Awards and Lunar New Year Celebration held in Austin. Representative Scott Hochberg shared this honor with State Representative Donna Howard of Austin. "I am honored to receive such a wonderful award from a fabulous organization. I have great respect for the work CAAAD does to better our state," said Representative Hochberg.
