(HOUSTON) September 14, 2011 … Put some big fun into your life with the Elephant Open House at the Houston Zoo on Saturday, June 18, 2011. That’s when Methai, Tess, Tucker, Shanti, Baylor, Thai and Tupelo will welcome you into their home – their very big home – the elephant barn at the McNair Asian Elephant Habitat!

Did you ever wonder what a 10,000 pound animal eats every day? How do you give an elephant a pedicure? Join us for the Elephant Open House from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and learn about elephant diets, care, training, and more at our June Elephant Open House.

During the Houston Zoo’s Elephant Open House, the state-of-the-art elephant barn at the McNair Asian Elephant Habitat will be open for exploration. Each elephant “bedroom” in the barn will highlight a different aspect of elephant care. Throughout the morning you can meet the keepers who care for our herd every day and learn more about these majestic animals that call the Houston Zoo home. The Elephant Open House also includes a continental breakfast.

Turn your visit into a one-of-a-kind experience when you enter the Pachyderm Picasso raffle for just $5 per ticket. It's your chance to win a masterpiece painted by one of our elephants! And, for just $25 you can have your picture taken with Methai, the matriarch of the Houston Zoo elephant family. Photos will be printed on-site, and make a great memento of your morning with the elephants.

Tickets are $65 per person, non-member and $55 per person for Zoo members. Children UNDER 4 years of age are free. Capacity is limited to 100 guests. All proceeds from the Elephant Open House benefit elephant care at the Houston Zoo.
