Houston Job Watch
Mayor Parker says Local Market Outpacing Other Major Texas Cities

(08/24/2011)

The 10-county Houston metropolitan region gained 65,100 jobs from July 2010 to July 2011, according to estimates released by the Texas Workforce Commission. “This was the strongest 12-month job performance since May 2008,” said Mayor Parker. “We were among the last to feel the impact of the recession and we are among the first to recover.”

Since Mayor Parker took office in January of 2010, the local private sector has created 125,200 jobs, recouping more than 75 percent of the jobs lost during the recession. The area’s 2.6 percent annual job growth rate exceeds that of other major metropolitan areas in Texas.

* 2.4 percent for San Antonio-New Braunfels
* 2.3 percent for El Paso
* 2.3 percent for Dallas-Ft. Worth-Arlington
* 1.8 percent for Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos

The two sectors of the local economy that are growing the fastest are health care and energy. There is also healthy growth in manufacturing, which has recouped 46 percent of the jobs it lost during the recession.

Signs of growth in the oil industry are evident in last week’s Baker Hughes rig count of 1,974. This is just 56 rigs shy of the previous high of 2,031 rigs reached in the second week of September 2008. Oil prices remain fairly stable – above $80 a barrel – which bodes well for continuing drilling activity.

“Houston has a good economic story to tell, but that good news often gets lost among all the other less positive information about the nation’s economy as a whole,” said Parker. “I want to tell the world that we are racing past other major cities struggling to recover.”
