Students at William P. Hobby Elementary School
to Receive Donated School Supplies from Houston’s C.A.R.E. Group

(06/13/2011)

(Houston, TX) -- The Chinese American Relief Effort (also known as C.A.R.E.) has selected William P. Hobby elementary school as the recipient of this year’s school supply program. The school is named after the late Governor William P. Hobby and opened in 1964. In the 2009-2010 year, the school’s student population was 816 students, with 51% Hispanic and 48% African-American. The teacher profile shows that the school has not had a teacher or staff member of Asian Pacific American descent since 2005. The presence of C.A.R.E. will also represent cultural awareness to the community. School supplies will be distributed at the school on Saturday, August 27, 2011.

C.A.R.E. is an alliance of over 20 Chinese-American civic, faith-based, business and other nonprofit entities. These entities, along with financial support from Houston’s Chinese-American community, will host its annual Independence Day event on Saturday, July 2nd, from 11 am to 3 pm at the Chinese Community Center. There will be variety food booths, games and entertainment on the event day. Member groups have begun selling raffle tickets for round trip airline tickets in order to raise at least $20,000 toward this school supplies charity effort.

C.A.R.E. was founded in 1993 when members of this alliance wanted to advance a mission of shared common interests and goals of helping the underprivileged, as well as enhancing harmony and communication among ethnic groups in the greater Houston metropolitan area. Many of C.A.R.E.’s earliest projects included providing meals to the homeless at the Star of Hope shelter, renovating a gymnasium stage and building a garden at the Richmond State School, hosting a Chinese New Year Festival for the senior residents at the Goldberg Tower, and building a winter wonderland for the children at Casa de Esperanza. However, CARE’s signature project has been donating school supplies to the financially challenged elementary students. Each year, at least one elementary school is selected as the recipient of the donated school supplies, which has impacted over 16,000 elementary school students throughout the years.

Ms. Garia Hui is the President of C.A.R.E., she can be reached at (713) 271-1818 OR (832) 283-8878, or by email: garia@gariainsurance.com.

C.A.R.E. is a 501 (c) (3) organization affiliated with Chinese Community Center and donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowable and set forth at www.irs.gov.
