Passing of Associate Presiding Judge, Herbert W. Gee

HOUSTON, Texas – The Honorable Herbert W. Gee, Associate Presiding Judge for the City of Houston Municipal Courts, passed away peacefully Saturday, March 12, 2011. To honor his service to the City of Houston Municipal Courts, the Municipal flag has been lowered to half staff at the central courthouse.

Director and Presiding Judge, Barbara E. Hartle stated, “Judge Gee was a guiding light and a strong support to me and all Municipal Court employees. Words cannot express how deeply he will be missed, but his legacy lives on in those he mentored and whose lives he touched.”

Judge Gee was a lifelong Houstonian. He attended Sam Houston High school and upon graduation, attended Texas Tech University, the University of Texas, and finally the University of Houston, where he earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics in 1965.

He began a teaching career with the Houston Independent School District, teaching mathematics at Jeff Davis High School from 1966 to 1969, while simultaneously attending South Texas College of Law School. He graduated from law school in 1969 and began his legal career at the City of Houston where he served as an Assistant City Attorney assigned to the City of Houston Municipal Courts as a prosecutor from 1969 until 1978.

Prior to his service to the City of Houston, Judge Gee served other municipalities, including cities of Spring Valley, Stafford, The Meadows, Mount Belvieu, Humble and Missouri City, where he served as either a prosecutor or as an Associate Judge.

In 2000, Mayor Lee P. Brown appointed Judge Gee as a Municipal Court Judge. Shortly thereafter, former Director and Presiding Judge Berta A. Mejia tapped him as the Court’s Administrative Judge, and then as Associate Presiding Judge, a position he held until his passing.

“Judge Gee fought cancer courageously, and always with a positive attitude. His friends and colleagues will remember him fondly as the quintessential seeker of justice for all,” stated Judge Mejia.

Throughout his career, Judge Gee maintained various professional memberships and affiliations with Federal, State and local bar associations. He was guest speaker at various legal seminars and conferences on a variety of legal topics, including immigration law.

At the community level, Judge Gee and his extended family formed the Gee Family Association Education Fund of Greater Houston, which awards annual scholarships to applicants of Asian descent who wish to pursue education beyond the high school level.
