Demolition Day For Longtime Houston Eyesore And Crime Magnet
A Strong End to the Gable of Inwood’s Years on City of Houston’s Dangerous Building List

(Houston, Tx) – Council Member Jarvis Johnson is proud to announce the demolition of the Gables of Inwood Apartments. The property, located at 5600 Holly View Drive, Houston, Texas 77091, will be torn down on Monday, February 7, 2011 at 11:30 a.m. Council Member Johnson will address this victory before the demolition.

“This is a great day in the City of Houston, especially in the District B area, because for years this property has been an inhibitor to positive growth for the Antoine/DeSoto area. Such buildings have prevented community redevelopment and economic growth. I am proud of our continuing achievements in the mission to rid our neighborhoods of not only abandoned apartments, but also vacant homes, and buildings. The beatification of the Antoine/DeSoto area can now truly begin to unfold for its deserving residents,” states Council Member Jarvis Johnson.

Jim Noteware, Director of the City’s Housing and Community Development Department, applauded the demolition. “No longer will the Gables at Inwood threaten our families, commercial development and progress of the community. This demolition is essential for further investment and rehabilitation that will ultimately lead to greater access of quality affordable housing.”

Gables of Inwood Apartments has been in a disastrous condition for several years. The complex is a public safety hazard, a nuisance and a haven for crime. The property is comprised of rotten wood, shattered windows, and unsecured openings that once housed now stolen air conditioners. The owner received several requests and citations for the building to meet requirements but there was never responded to the City of Houston.

Council Member Johnson credits Mayor Annise Parker, Houston Contractors Association, Housing and Community Development Department, Public Works and Engineering Multi—Family Habitability Unit, and the city’s legal department for addressing the issues at Gables of Inwood.
