Holocaust Scholar to Discuss
"A World Behind Wire: The Nazi Camps and Ghettos"

HOUSTON, TX (Jan. 21, 2011) - Many people are aware that Nazi Germany maintained a complex of detention sites: concentration camps, extermination camps, ghettos, forced labor camps and prisoner-of-war camps. However, aside from some specialists, very few people are aware of the scale of the detention system that existed in Germany and occupied Europe, the absolute numbers of sites involved and the many different kinds of sites.

The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) has undertaken the preparation of the "Encyclopedia of Camps and Ghettos, 1933-1945" to address this gap, and Dr. Geoffrey Megargee will present an overview of the universe of detention facilities, as well as of the progress on the project so far in this public lecture "A World Behind Wire: The Nazi Camps and Ghettos,"scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2011, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the Museum's Albert and Ethel Herzstein Theater at the Morgan Family Center, 5401 Caroline St., in Houston's Museum District.

Megargee is the applied research scholar at the Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies at the USHMM, where he is editor-in-chief for the multi-volume encyclopedia. He received his undergraduate degree in history from St. Lawrence University in 1981. Following stints as an army officer and in the business world, he entered San Jose State University, where he received a master's degree in European history in 1991, and then Ohio State University, from which he graduated with a doctorate in military history in 1998.

He is the recipient of, among other honors, a Fulbright grant for research in Germany, upon which he based his book "Inside Hitler's High Command" (winner of the Society for Military History's 2001 Distinguished Book Award). He is also the author of "War of Annihilation: Combat and Genocide on the Eastern Front, 1941."

The first volume of the encyclopedia appeared in June 2009 and has received a National Jewish Book Award and a Judaica Reference Award, among other distinctions. Megargee is also a presidential counselor for the National World War II Museum in New Orleans, Louisiana, and has served for the last four years as treasurer of the United States Commission on Military History.
