BARC Benefits from Local School Volunteers;
Special Students Make Further Committment to Special Animals

(01/13/2011)

Students from Gateway Academy will volunteer at BARC today. Students and other representatives from the school volunteered at the City of Houston's Animal Adoption center last Wednesday, and both parties look forward to an ongoing partnership. The students will be at BARC through early afternoon.

The Gateway Academy provides an enhanced learning environment and curriculum for its students, which have differences including ADHD, Asperberger's Syndrome, Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, and Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. The students will spend their time today working around the shelter, and will pay particular attention to the Cat Adoption Building. Last week, the students washed puppies and walked the guests in the Dog Adoption Building. Gateway Academy counselors noted that several of the students which have limited communication skills had spoken more at BARC than they had ever seen elsewhere.
