Rice Media Center marks 40th anniversary as it hosts Cinema Arts Festival Nov. 10-14

(11/09/2010)

FROM RICE NEWS STAFF REPORTS

As part of the Rice Media Center's 40th anniversary, actress Isabella Rossellini will introduce "Journey to Italy," a 1954 film that was directed by her father, Roberto Rossellini, and that starred her mother, Ingrid Bergman, Nov. 11. The film will be shown at 8 p.m.

The event is part of the 2010 Cinema Arts Festival, the only U.S. film festival devoted to showcasing films by and about artists working in the visual, performing and literary arts.

In addition to "Journey to Italy," Rice cinema will also feature the classic 1968 Cuban film "Memories of Underdevelopment" at 6:15 p.m. Nov. 12 and its 2010 sequel, "Memories of Overdevelopment," at 8:30 p.m. Nov. 12. (with Director Miguel Coyula and producer, David Leitner in attendance)

The festival's final film, "Max Ernst Hanging," will be screened at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 13. The documentary follows patron, collector and curator Dominique de Menil as she hangs the 1973 exhibition "Inside the Sight," in conversation with 20th-century surrealist artist Max Ernst. Dominique de Menil and her husband, John de Menil, were instrumental in establishing the Rice Media Center. Her son Francois and grandson John de Menil, who helped make the film, will attend.

All four films will be shown at the Rice Media Center.

Roberto Rossellini, the noted Italian director, was a founding member of the Rice Media Center in 1970. He made "Journey to Italy" after his groundbreaking neo-realist works, such as "Roma, citta aberta (Rome, Open City)" and "Paisa." Isabella Rossellini, who has starred in numerous films, including "Blue Velvet," also directed "My Dad is 100 Years Old" (2005), which will be shown before "Journey to Italy."

All tickets for the Cinema Arts Festival films are $10. Since sell-out crowds are expected at all screenings, advance ticket purchases are recommended. Go to the Cinema Arts Society's website, http://cinemartsociety.org/. Tickets will be on sale at Rice Cinema one hour prior to the screenings if seats are available.
